The picture on the left shows the stone
as it was found on a riverbank. Stones polished
by running water
or the sea are generally flatter and more rounded than those found
on
a mountain. The first thing Ciruelo does is
to prepare a series of sketches based on what
he wants to paint
and on what the stone itself suggests. Painting
on stone follows the
same process as painting on canvas.
As you can see the final result is a three dimensional
piece of art; Petropictos is something halfway
between a painting and a sculpture.
